Juvenile Justice Activism Campaign

For too long have juvenile offenders in the Criminal Justice System been neglected.

The mental and physical developments of these children are damaged by the system's countless abuses, specifically evident in the solitary confinement and educational neglect of juvenile offenders.

This video was made as part of my bigger activism project regarding the injustices committed to juveniles in detention facilities, especially in regard to their access to quality education.

"She Lives in Limbo"

Music featured:
Girlie - by Alexandra Savior
Film featured:
A Ghost Story (2017) dir. David Lowery

I thoroughly enjoyed filming this project. I really wanted to emphasize the repetitive nature of everyday life since the COVID-19 pandemic hit. The days, weeks, and months seem to blend together like a never-ending limbo to the point where even feeling like a human being seems foreign. My biggest inspiration came from David Lowery's film "A Ghost Story" in which a man grapples with being stuck in limbo after his unexpected death. He is forced to relive his life multiple times and watch as new people come and go as he exists, unable to move on to the afterlife. Since March of 2020, I have felt stuck in a similar way - unable to continue on with the life that I used to live and forced into an awkward standstill in time.

"Anyone Can Cook"

Music featured:
Hallelujah Junction - 1st Movement - by John Adams.
Films featured:
Lady Bird (2017) dir. Greta Gerwig
Ratatouille (2007) dir. Brad Bird

When I started this film, I had no clue in what direction I wanted to take it. I knew I wanted to present the new baking skills I'd developed in quarantine, but it wasn't until I started recording my voice-over that I realized how much cooking means to me. As I discuss in the Mashup, I have never had a good relationship with food. It wasn't until I picked up baking that I was truly able to value what food does for us as human beings. Food, as I have come to learn, fuels us, nurtures us, and keeps us alive. It is not an enemy. It took me far longer than I like to admit to realize it, but learning how to cook shifted my perspective in a way I never understood until this project. Sharing this piece of me brought me out of my comfort zone, but I am glad I was able to emphasize a personal positive outcome of this pandemic.
